The World Rally Driver's Association is asking to speak with the FIA about an "exorbitant" fine levied against a driver who cursed on air.

World rally drivers issued a joint statement on Monday condemning the governing body's crackdown on swearing and seeking talks with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem to help find an "urgent solution".

Drivers in the World Rally Championship have released a joint statement calling for an "urgent solution" to the FIA's swearing clampdown.

Fourmaux became the first driver to fall victim to a highly controversial rule introduced by the FIA over the winter break. Under the new legislation, drivers in premier racing series can receive punishments that scale to £101,400 (€120,000) fines, championship point deductions and even a one-month suspension for repeated swearing.

WRC drivers have taken a stand against the FIA's "unrealistic' ban on swearing, calling for talks to find an "urgent solution".

The Hyundai driver was dished a AUD $16,500 (EUR $10,000) fine and imposed a second, 12-month suspended fine of $33,000 (EUR $20,000) for dropping an F-bomb on live television. Fourmaux will not have to pay the second fine as long as he does not re-offend.

The World Rally Drivers Alliance has sent an urgent statement to the FIA following Adrien Fourmeaux's fine in Sweden earlier this month, calling for a review of the regulations surrounding inappropriate behaviour.
