Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) died Wednesday morning, his family confirmed. Connolly, 75, has represented northern Virginia in Congress since he was first elected in 2008. Before that, he sat on Fairfax County's Board of Supervisors from 1995 to 2007.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), who according to Virginia law can call a special election to fill the congressional vacancy, did not share a timeline for the election.
The long-time representative from Northern Virginia has died at 75 following a battle with cancer. He is being remembered for his advocacy of federal workers and the contractor community as well as championing initiatives to improve how the government buys goods and services.
