John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan were relieved that 49ers’ top pick Mykel Williams escaped the NFL Draft’s top-10 slots to land on their recalibrating defensive line.

The 49ers’ biggest step yet in their recovery from last season’s 6-11 woes began with Thursday’s first-round selection of Mykel Williams in the NFL Draft.

The big DE provides a real boost on the defensive line, giving the 49ers a much-needed mismatch on the edge as he and Bosa build a true tandem on outside. While Bosa will still need some coverage at defensive tackle, Willliams gives them a blue chip caliber prospect at edge.
