I'm talking about Nvidia  (NVDA) , of course, and the question is: Can it help power the S&P 500 to another record high?The answer is yes. In premarket trading shares of the AI-chip giant are trading up nearly 1%.

The Dow Jones index Wednesday trimmed gains that arrived after bank earnings and tame wholesale inflation data. ASML stock plunged on this warning.

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) shares climbed 0.7% on Thursday, July 10, to close at $164.10,  outperforming the broader market and pushing the chipmaker over the $4 trillion market capitalization threshold at the close of trading.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) stock soared Thursday after the contract chipmaker delivered second-quarter results that blew past analyst expectations, driven by insatiable global demand for its advanced processor technologies essential for artificial intelligence applications.

Currently, Nvidia accounts for nearly 8 percent of the S&P 500. That’s the highest weighting for a single stock in 45 years, according to Todd Sohn, senior ETF strategist at Strategas Securities. For context, industrials account for 8.7 percent of the index, while healthcare stands at 9.1 percent.

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) shares surged 4% to close at $170.70 on Tuesday, outpacing broader market indices as investors responded positively to news about graphics processing unit (GPU) exports to China resuming.
