LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The final bell rang early for students in Laurel County, after a tornado tore through the area Friday night. Officials with the Laurel County School District announced they are canceling the remainder of the school year due to the damage.
A Kentucky woman who lost both of her parents when a powerful EF-4 tornado swept through the community of London said her heart is broken and there are no words to describe how she’s feeling since the disaster struck nearly a week ago.
Following the recent decision to end the 2024-2025 school year, the Laurel County Board of Education voted to request that the Kentucky Board of Education waive three days toward the school calendar.
The family's home was picked up and thrown across the street when a tornado ripped through the area, destroying everything they own.
"We're gonna keep coming back over, and over, and over to show everybody that we're going to rebuild every structure and every life," Gov. Andy Beshear said.
An EF-4 tornado with 170 mph winds destroyed the Clines’ home, which has been in the family for three generations.
One area was hit by crime overnight. Bill Vaughn Memorial Trailer Park was robbed Tuesday night. Donations, brought to help survivors, were stolen.
