Israel announced on Thursday it was sending negotiators to Cairo for talks, seeking to extend a first phase of a ceasefire due to expire in two days, in the apparent aim of securing the release of more hostages while delaying any final deal on Gaza's future.

The delegations from Israel and Qatar arrived in Cairo Thursday night, along with American representatives, to continue negotiations, Egypt’s state information services said. Talks have started to discuss the next stages of the truce, it added.

Israel said on Tuesday it had agreed to hold talks to demarcate its border with Lebanon, adding it would release five Lebanese detainees held by the Israeli military in what it called a "gesture to the Lebanese president".

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has warned Egypt against breaching its peace treaty with Israel, highlighting concerns over a military buildup near its borders in the Sinai Peninsula, which also neighbors the Gaza Strip. Egypt did not respond to the accusations but has previously stated its commitment to the existing peace accords.
