A poison expert found death cap mushrooms near a Victorian sporting oval months before a deadly beef Wellington lunch, a jury has heard.

Mycologist Tom May, who is an internationally recognised fungi expert, told the jury death cap mushrooms can only be found beneath or close to oak trees or trees within the oak family.

These mushrooms can be located in parks, gardens and nature strips, the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria has said on its website. It often resides under exotic trees, especially oak (Quercus).

It can be found in clusters of several to dozens of mushrooms at the base of infected trees. However, the mushrooms do not always appear and the disease may still be present.
