Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday directed lawmakers to redraw the state’s congressional map as part of a special session that kicks off later this month, as the GOP seeks to retain its narrow US House majority after next year’s midterm elections.
Abbott wants an alternative means to gauge student progress and school accountability, not necessarily an end to standardized testing in Texas. For many critics, STAAR tests are a focus of resentment when low test scores in a single school are used to punish whole school districts.
