Nationals interim general manager Mike DeBartolo and interim manager Miguel Cairo are ready to try to turn around an organization that's had the second-worst record in the majors since 2020.

"The fans are frustrated. We're all frustrated," DeBartolo said. "We have a lot of interesting, exciting young pieces to build on."

Mike DeBartolo has been part of the Nationals organization since 2012. Yet in the past 48 hours, his role has changed drastically. DeBartolo was named Nationals interim general manager on Sunday following the firings of longtime GM Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez.

General manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez were fired on Sunday following their latest loss to the Red Sox, which concluded a dismal weekend where the Nats were decimated by Boston, which outscored Washington 21-5 in the previous two games. The team announced the move on Sunday night in a statement from principal owner Mark D. Lerner.

We don’t yet know whether Tuesday represented the public unveiling of the Mike DeBartolo era for the Washington Nationals, because there’s no guarantee anyone can carry out a vision when the word “interim” precedes your title and three or four months don’t constitute an “era.

Lerner also announced that assistant general manager Mike DeBartolo has been named as Rizzo's replacement on an interim basis. DeBartolo will immediately be tasked with running the draft room for next week's MLB Draft, in which the Nationals have the top pick.
