GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A female pygmy hippo named Penelope and her male mate, Jahari, are expecting their first calf. John Ball Zoo took to social media Thursday morning to announce the new pregnancy.

Penelope is a relatively new resident at John Ball Zoo. The zoo opened its new pygmy exhibit in June 2023 with Jahari, a male hippo. Penelope soon joined him, moving to Grand Rapids from Toronto.

Penelope, the zoo's female pygmy hippo, and her mate Jahari are expected to welcome their first calf this August, as shared in an announcement last Friday obtained by WZZM 13.
