A thrilling 2025 golf season has reached its final major as The Open Championship continues its 153rd playing this weekend at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. The oldest golf tournament in the world is back in Portrush for the first time in six years with the Claret Jug set to be awarded on site Sunday for just the third time in event history.
When the Royal Portrush Golf Club was founded, it was called simply “the Country Club.” Starting in 1892, the club was renamed “the Royal Country Club,” and in 1895, it became the “Royal Portrush Country Club.” The changing names have to do with the British royal family, and the history of royal golf clubs.
Over the second round, Scottie Scheffler did what he has done many times: made victory feel inevitable. But could this one be the toughest to hold on to?
A ll roads into Portrush town will close for five hours on Saturday for a loyalist parade, despite it clashing with The Open Championship. More than 80 bands and up to 2,000 participants are expected in the annual parade through Portrush on Saturday evening. It coincides with the penultimate day of the major golfing tournament.
