ATHENS – Greece has declared a state of emergency on the island of Chios as wildfires continue to burn uncontrollably for the second consecutive day, driven by strong winds and dry conditions.

Chios is in the midst of the tourist season and authorities also want to prevent the fires reaching areas famous for producing mastiha, a natural resin harvested from mastic trees.
