LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The final bell rang early for students in Laurel County, after a tornado tore through the area Friday night. Officials with the Laurel County School District announced they are canceling the remainder of the school year due to the damage.
One area was hit by crime overnight. Bill Vaughn Memorial Trailer Park was robbed Tuesday night. Donations, brought to help survivors, were stolen.
A tornado relief benefit concert will be held in Kentucky to support the ongoing recovery efforts. The EF-4 tornado was on the ground for 55 miles from Pulaski County to Laurel County. It had maximum winds of 170 mph, and claimed 19 people's lives.
"We're gonna keep coming back over, and over, and over to show everybody that we're going to rebuild every structure and every life," Gov. Andy Beshear said.
A Kentucky woman who lost both of her parents when a powerful EF-4 tornado swept through the community of London said her heart is broken and there are no words to describe how she’s feeling since the disaster struck nearly a week ago.
