Lung-targeted VEGF transgenic mice showed an asthma-like phenotype characterized by airway inflammation and AHR together with goblet cell hyperplasia, edema, smooth muscle cell hyperplasia and parenchymal and vascular remodeling (Lee et al. 2004a).

These findings suggest that acute degranulation of hyperplastic goblet cells may represent a mechanism for asthma exacerbations in mild and moderate asthma and that chronic degranulation of goblet cells may contribute to chronic airway narrowing in moderate asthma.
