Lake Lowell in Canyon County is 8,826.0 acres. Lake Lowell is a large reservoir with several management entities including the USFWS, USBOR, Canyon County, and IDFG. Most fishing opportunity occurs during the open boating season, April 15 - September 30.

The Lake Lowell Unit protects nesting colonies of western and Clark’s grebes and spectacular migratory and wintering concentrations of mallards and Canada geese. The Snake River Islands Unit provides important nesting habitat for ducks, geese, songbirds, herons, egrets and more.

Boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing are the major recreation activities at Lake Lowell, located 5 miles southwest of Nampa. Lake Lowell, originally called Deer Flat Reservoir, was the first storage reservoir completed for the Boise Project, one of the earliest Reclamation projects.

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge (11,388 acres) lies just outside the city of Nampa, surrounding the waters of Lake Lowell. This is a perfect resting place for migrating birds along the Pacific Flyway, including some pretty large concentrations of Canada geese and mallard ducks.

Fishing season on the Lake Lowell Unit is year-round, with seasonal access restrictions. Available species include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish. Refuge islands on the Snake River Islands Unit are accessible only by boat and are closed February 1-May 31.
