But Laurie was at heart, an artist. As a teenager, she was a painter; as her talents grew, she became a potter, a prize-winning gardener and more recently she was stretching her artistry into photography.

Lightfoot is the first openly lesbian black woman to serve as mayor of a major city in the United States, and the second openly lesbian woman (after Annise Parker) to serve as mayor of one of the ten most populous cities in the United States.

Oct 15, 2021 · Throughout her life, Laurie expressed her unique and artistic self in her beautiful gardens and her artwork. A celebration of life will be held at a future date in the Spring of 2022, date to be determined. Donations in Laurie's memory can be made to your local Humane Society.
