The other two species, Wattled Cranes and Grey Crowned Cranes have broader ranges, while nearly 99 percent of the Blue Crane population is located only in South Africa. In this week’s activity, we will hear a story about how the Blue Crane became the national bird of South Africa.

Blue Cranes are tall birds, reaching up to 1.2m. They are blue-grey in colour, have a distinctive white patch on their head, and have long, black wing feathers that resemble tail feathers when standing. WHERE ARE THEY FOUND? The Blue Crane is found in South Africa, with only a small population also found in northern Namibia and western Swaziland.

The blue crane is a light blue-grey, has a long neck supporting a rather bulbous head, long legs and elegant wing plumes which sweep to the ground. It eats seeds, insects and reptiles. Blue cranes lay their eggs in the bare veld, often close to water.

Cranes occupy an important role in many cultures – not least in South Africa, where the Blue Crane is a symbol of bravery. Our national bird is known by many names throughout South Africa: mogolodi in Sepedi, bloukraanvoël in Afrikaans and mxololo in Ndebele.
