From my understanding schrodinger’s equation helps define the wave function and probability density of the location of a particle but I don’t know what that has to do with cats

Only if an outsider can observe the pressing of the buttons. If the system is closed to observation, then the cat has not pressed any buttons, pressed one of the buttons, pressed the other button, and pressed both. The idea is that superposition is lost upon observation, which is why the cat is in a box: to prevent that observation.
