Set on Nozzle (Fig. 3): Nozzle is seated on the vessel. The diameter of the pressure vessel opening in the shell or head coincides with the ID (inner diameter) of the nozzle neck. Depending on the Reinforcement requirement of the pressure vessel nozzles, two types of nozzles are used.

Jul 12, 2009 · ASME code will spell out the welding necessary and NDT required if "set on" nozzles are used, as well as pressure/temperature limits for such nozzles. In general, you will have to bevel the nozzle wall to provide full penetration welding if possible.

May 8, 2003 · If inside of wall is accessible a set in nozzle is highly preferred, as a full penetration of good quality is easier to obtain. Also, if a full penetration is not a must, the set in nozzle may be welded with two fillet welds.

Set-on where the nozzle is on the vessel surface and the vessel opening coincides with the ID of the nozzle neck. Nozzles may also be self-reinforced, or they may require an additional plate to assist in external loading on the nozzle.

In this paper three design methods for nozzle connections with flush (set-on) nozzles in cylindrical shells under internal pressure (pressure vessels) are investigated and compared.
