At the center of Malebolge is the ninth and final circle of hell, known as Cocytus. In Dante's version of Hell, categories of sin are punished in different circles, with the depth of the circle (and placement within that circle) symbolic of the amount of punishment to be inflicted.

Jul 15, 2013 · Malebolge is the name given by Dante to the eighth Circle of Hell, the only circle that has a proper name. Dante set several cantos of his Inferno in the Malebolge, precisely chapters from Canto 18 to Canto 30.

Eighth Circle (Fraud) The Eighth Circle of Hell is for the fraudulent. Dante and Virgil reach it on the back of Geryon, a flying monster with different natures, just like the fraudulent. This circle of Hell is divided into 10 Bolgias (stony ditches) with bridges between them.

Dante now finds himself in the Eighth Circle, called Malebolge ("Evil ditches"): the upper half of the Hell of the Fraudulent and Malicious. The Eighth Circle is a large funnel of stone shaped like an amphitheatre around which run a series of ten deep, narrow, concentric ditches or trenches called bolge (singular: bolgia ).

Virgil and Dante find themselves outside the Eighth Circle of Hell, known as Malebolge (“Evil Pouches”). Dante describes the relationship between the circle’s structure and its name: the circle has a wall running along the outside and features a great circular pit at its center; ten evenly spaced ridges run between the wall and the pit.

Canto XVIII is the first of thirteen cantos dedicated to the eighth circle of Hell. In this circle are punished people who used fraud against those with whom they had no special bond of trust (simple fraud).

The offenses of circles 8 and 9--the lowest two circles of hell--all fall under the rubric of fraud, a form of malice--as Virgil explains in Inferno 11.22-7--unique to human beings and therefore more displeasing to God than sins of concupiscence and violence.

The Eighth Level of Hell is for those guilty of fraud: the thieves, liars, cheats, sorcerers and false prophets. 9th Level: The Ninth Circle of Hell Treachery is punished in the 9th and lowest level of hell.

The enormous eighth circle, featuring souls who committed ten different varieties of fraudulent sin, extends from Inferno 18 all the way to Inferno 30. The eighth circle makes up 38% of Dante’s Hell, textually speaking.
