Aug 12, 2013 · Gotta throw out the idea of a Pygmy as a milker. One of my pygmy goat gave two quarts a day. Butterfat is high which makes the milk taste really, really good! Pygmy milk is right up there with Nigi milk on the butterfat scale (maybe even a little higher if you believe some of the charts). Also - they milk for a long time.

Nov 29, 2011 · If you want milk cows for a volume of milk, stick with Holstein, Swiss, or Jersey. A well bred Holstein or Swiss will give 60-100 lbs of milk daily if fed well (grain, hay, silage), and a Jersey a little less than that, with higher butterfat. The Heritage breeds are nice, but you will be looking at 10-15 lbs of milk each day.

Jun 2, 2009 · Cleanliness is the best route to GOOD milk. That and a good diet. Dirty cow milk would taste funky, too. Wash the udder, use glass and stainless containers when possible, strain it, and cool it fast. I think Nub and Boer milk tastes the best, other breeds taste 'watered down' (like skim milk) to me, since the butterfat is lower.

May 8, 2022 · But of course... the amount of fat in the milk, is not just a breed thing, but also an individual doe thing. And as to handling of milk... HUGE difference in taste. Milk 12 hours old verses 24 hours old, HUGE difference. If it was cooled super fast... or pasteurized.... all HUGE changes in taste. The older the milk the more "goat" taste.

Dec 7, 2023 · Typically the wool from milk breeds isn’t very good quality. Maybe you could buy some katahdin ewes, breed to a milk breed ram, keep the ewe lambs and breed to a Katahdin ram. It takes 3-4 generations to breed the wool out. Then you could have your milking ewes and the ease of hair sheep. The Katahdin club has a breed up program.

Aug 9, 2011 · IMO (let's use Feta as an example) making that same cheese with cow's milk or goat's milk, the end result is slightly different in flavor. (I've never had a pure sheep's milk Feta so won't compare it). I don't like the cow's milk variety. The taste is not the same.

Aug 17, 2009 · The sweetest best tasting milk we had came from out spanish does (almost tasted like malted milk). Our Nigerian milkers are OK, but when I pull 2 Qts from a large breed doe in a quarter of the time it takes to get 16 oz from a Nigerian doe I just can't seem to get excited about milking the Nigerians.
