Mar 4, 2019 · Joshua Tree National Park is comprised of two very distinct deserts, the Colorado which covers the eastern portion of the park at elevations below 3,000 feet (910 metres) and the Mojave which occupies the higher and cooler western portion.

Arriving in the extreme south of California, we are amazed by the countless Joshua trees that sprout from the Mojave and Colorado deserts. Like the Mormon settlers who named them, we cross and praise these inhospitable settings of the North American Far West.

Crossed by two deserts, the park presents a variety of landscapes, from sandy plains to rugged mountains. Joshua Tree’s climate is typically desert-like, with hot days and cool nights. The park is famous for its Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia), endemic species of the Mojave Desert.

The 22 miles of hiking in Joshua Tree National Park gave us the opportunity to experience two different deserts and the unique flora and fauna of each. Our travels will now take us to the Sonoran Desert and a unique type of caucus in Saguaro National Park in Arizona.
