Running through Braxton, Clay and Kanawha counties, as of September 1, 2024, the trail meanders 52 miles along the Elk River, with an additional 18-mile rails-with-trail section running along Buffalo Creek.

Jun 24, 2024 · Departing from the junction of the Elk River and Buffalo Creek in Clay, the tour offers a unique 12-mile round trip journey along the historic Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad, following the twists and turns of the crystal-clear water through the breathtaking forest, past the stunning Devil’s Sawmill Waterfall and over Sand Fork Bridge.

The trail runs alongside the Elk River for its entire length, although views are largely obscured by dense tree cover. On the trail’s eastern side, Charleston’s Yeager Airport is hidden from view by a substantial elevation change typical of the scenic region’s topography.
