Wood glue does expand due to the presence of polymers or polyvinyl acetate (PVA) within the glue. This polymer expands when exposed to water and causes the glue to swell, which helps to form the strong bond between two pieces of wood. As the glue dries, it shrinks and sets in place, forming an even stronger bond. Expanding foam fillers are also used for gap filling, and are made from latex or polyurethane. They expand on contact with air and dry to form a strong bond. Woodweld or Timberweld is another gap filling adhesive that sets with a bond better than timber in around 10 mins.
