Forest Keeper protects over 20 million acres of U.S. public lands and supports forest guardians around the world. We safeguard forests for our future. We are a coalition of scientists, attorneys, experts, and grassroots organizations protecting national forests and other public lands.
MISSION — FOREST KEEPER
Forest Keeper investigates forest issues, monitors timber harvests and pipeline construction, and uses legal and political muscle to protect public lands. Our education and outreach programs help the public participate in forest planning.

Forest Keepers monitor forest health and water quality, inventory old-growth forests, help maintain trails, work with management agencies on forest planning, and ensure that the public’s voice is represented in forest decision making.

Our Forest Keepers serve as the eyes, ears, and voices of their forests. They organize hikes, clean-ups, trail crews, and forest field work to assist understaffed federal agencies. They also advocate for forests and monitor them on the ground—which is more important than ever before.

I HEART CRAGGY — FOREST KEEPER
The coalition—led by Forest Keeper, I Heart Pisgah, and Friends of Craggy-Big Ivy—is working with Congress to introduce the Craggy Mountain Wilderness and National Scenic Area Act. It will permanently protect the stunning vistas from Craggy Gardens, the most popular and most photographed spot along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Leadership Asheville Partnership — FOREST KEEPER
Forest Keeper has formed a unique collaboration with UNC Asheville’s Leadership Asheville program. The primary aim of the Leadership Asheville Program is to strengthen participants’ knowledge of, commitment to, and involvement in collaborative community leadership.

Prescribed burns, targeted forest thinning, and emergency firebreaks are effective strategies to protect communities and residences, but large-scale logging only makes wildfires worse. older forests are better for controlling wildfires.
SAVE THE SWAMP — FOREST KEEPER
DON’t DRAIN THE SWAMP: SAVE THE OKEFENOKEE FROM MINING (AGAIN) At 438,000 acres, the Okefenokee Swamp is a vast labyrinth of dripping cypress forests, pine islands, lily ponds and blackwater channels, most of which are protected within the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.
