Feb 11, 2019 · Using “realist sculptural techniques accompanied by surrealist imagination,” self-taught artist Johnson Tsang taps into his subconscious to reinterpret reality. For years, we've been drawn to Tsang's mind-bending body of work, which he has continued to cultivate with a new batch of clay portraits.

Born in Hong Kong, Johnson Tsang’s works mostly employ realist sculptural techniques accompanied by surrealist imagination. In 2002, Johnson started to represent versatile splashes with ceramics. He created the Yuanyang series, which were then collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Yingge Ceramics Museum of Taiwan.

Tsang is best known for his face-shaped sculptures that display an array of emotions. In the Lucid Dream II Series, Tsang uses clay to create multiple human faces that appear twisted, contorted, and literally bend the mind.

Johnson Cheung-shing Tsang devotes 50 to 60 hours per week to creating his illusionistic ceramic sculptures, which run the gamut from lyrically beautiful to arrestingly thought provoking.
