Hexetidine (HEX) belongs to the group of pyrimidine derivatives. It is a broad-spectrum antiseptic, active in vitro and in vivo against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as yeast. However, oral retention appears to be limited so that the antimicrobial activity does not last long.

Hexetidine is very safe oral antiseptic with broad antibacterial and antifungal activity in vivo and in vitro. It has local-anesthetics, astringent and deodorant activity. Also, it has very strong antiplac effects.

Hexetidine kills bacteria and fungi and is therefore used to treat minor oral infections, including thrush. Hexetidine can also be used to treat other oral conditions that are caused or made worse by bacteria, such as gum disease, sore throat, and recurring mouth ulcers.
