.023 vs .030 for sheet metal - Weld Talk Message Boards
For gmaw (mig) I've always used .023. Not cause it's best, but because thats what was in the 1st. mig machine I ever ran. (Old Solar 2160) Liked the "MIG" so much I bought one and ran .023 for years on EVERYTHING that I didn't weld with a stick, or tig. Finding the "sweet-spot" between wire speed & heat was the key up to all the machine will do.

I've read that works for welding shut drilled holes. I have no experience with mig other than reading various forums. I've done some gas welding with varing degrees of success. I've soldered all my life. Gas would make a mess of the sheet metal flatness, probably worse than the mig will.

MIG or Braze sheet metal patch? - Weld Talk Message Boards
Braze flux is corrosive ( that is how it cleans the metal ) , if any flux is left over the metal will rust. Add in a torch flame oxidizes the metal a bit and you have every reason why MIG is so much better on automotive sheetmetal. Brazing is good for small areas that need "glued " together to reduce the chances of cracking.

I even turned the welder up way past the recommended setting for the thickness of sheet metal I'm welding and it still won't stick.
Gap or no gap when butt welding? - Weld Talk Message Boards
Feb 14, 2004 · A gas welding technique question: Most textbooks tell you to butt thin sheetmetal together then tack and weld. When I was taught gas welding at a coommunity college, the instructor insisted that all metal 1/8" or less should have a gap of the metal thickness between them. Then you tack and weld. He claimed much reduced distortion as a result.
