The posterior limb of the internal capsule carries motor fibers for the arm, trunk, and legs, as well as sensory fibers. Lesions of the posterior limb of the internal capsule can lead to contralateral weakness and contralateral sensory loss. The primary motor cortex sends its axons through the posterior limb of the internal capsule, so lesions result in a contralateral hemiparesis or hemiplegia.
