Shuhe Ancient Town is the earliest habitation of the Naxi ancestors. It is also an important and well-preserved post of the Ancient Tea Horse Route, an international trade route in Southwest China that uses the horse as its main vehicle.

Four kilometers (2 miles) to the northwest of the Lijiang Old Town, at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, lies a compact village hidden in the forest, the Shuhe Ancient Town.

Shuhe serves as a living specimen of the Naxi transition from agricultural to commercial civilization, boasting precious relics and architectural marvels such as Ming Dynasty murals and temples like Dajue Palace and Sansheng Palace from the Qing Dynasty.

Shuhe is one of the oldest towns in Lijiang. Like other old cities in tourist destinations in both China and other countries, this old town has turned its function into quite commercial. The houses have been converted into cafes, restaurants or souvenir shops even though the characteristics of the old building are still preserved.

Shuhe Ancient Town in Lijiang houses many ancient temples, such as the Longquan Temple, Sansheng Palace, and Shilian Temple. Pay a visit to the ancient temples scattered throughout the town, witness the locals practicing their religious rituals, and you’ll learn about their significance.

As one of the earliest habitations of Naxi ancestors on the plains of Lijiang, Shuhe Ancient Town is the living specimen of Naxi people’s transition from an agricultural civilization to a commercial one.

Nestled at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, 6 km northwest of Lijiang old town, Shuhe was once a staging post at ancient Tea & Horse Road. With an altitude of 2440 meters above sea level, it is a tranquil town with a population of about 3000 people.

Located in the northwest of Lijiang City, the Shuhe Ancient Town occupies a total area of 3 million square meters. It includes Qinglong Bridge, Ancient Tea Horse Road Museum, Dragon Pool, and other tourist attractions. Every evening, there is a campfire party at Sifang Tingyin Square.
