The first verse of the minor jihad, the armed struggle, revealed at that time is in Chapter 22, Surah Al-Hajj, of the Qur’an, verses 39-40. It clearly explains the purpose of the minor jihad:

Do your duty to Allah, seek the means of approach unto Him, and strive with might and main in his cause: that ye may prosper.” يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَابْتَغُواْ إِلَيهِ الْوَسِيلَةَ وَجَاهِدُواْ فِي سَبِيلِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ.

Jihad in Arabic means struggle or strive. The Quranic verses deal with struggle or striving for personal growth and against evil from inner self. The quranic verses on stiving or jihad also deal with the cause of God and against Satan and satan's constituents.
