The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews was founded on 14 May 1754, with the first Challenge for the Silver Club. Evolving over 250 colourful years of British history, it has grown from a small society into a club with 2,500 members worldwide.

In 1897, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club was invited to take control of the running of golf tournaments at other courses, it became the ruling authority of golf all over the world except the United States and Mexico, where this responsibility rests with the United States Golf Association.

The R&A seeks to engage in and support activities for the benefit of the sport of golf from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. Golf is open to all Championships

We booked a one hour walking tour through the St. Andrews golf course website. The price is reasonable and the experience truly enhanced our visit to the town. Our guide explained the history and much of the lure of this course. We took the 8am train from Edinburgh to Leuchars, then the bus to St. Andrews.
