Scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal (STT) or triscaphe joint arthritis is common, occurring on ~9% (range 2-16%) of wrist radiographs 3,4. It is typically degenerative (i.e. osteoarthritis) affecting the triscaphe articulation and presents with radial-sided wrist or base of thumb pain in patients over 50 years 1,2,4.

Scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal (STT) joint arthritis is a condition that affects the tiny joint at the base of the wrist, just below the base of the thumb. While less common than other wrist conditions, it can significantly affect hand and wrist function, particularly gripping and pinching.

Increased uptake at the STT joint can help identify the bony area of involvement. If a more global wrist arthrosis is present, that also can be seen on bone scanning. For soft tissue problems from tendinitis to ligament pathology, MRI can be a useful adjunct.

Scaphotrapezial trapezoidal (STT) osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative disease of the wrist, specifically at the site of articulation among the scaphoid, trapezium, and trapezoid. Dorsal intercalated segment instability (DISI) may coexist with STT joint OA.

MRI. The scaphotrapeziotrapezoid ligament can be difficult to visualize on MRI. It can be best appreciated on coronal, sagittal and 3D images or MR arthrograms and usually has a hypointense appearance 2. Likewise, any injury to the scaphotrapeziotrapezoid ligament is difficult to detect in particular if the scaphocapitate ligament is intact.
