For twenty three years between the two wars, the 2nd Infantry Division was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Many of its officers and men were Texans. However, the unit was also made up of a large Hispanic community as well as the Czechs and Slovaks from one of the largest communities in the USA, settled in Texas.

On May 30, 1942, just five months after America's entry into World War II, over 150,000 Houstonians gathered in the heart of the city to witness the induction of a thousand men into the U.S. Navy. Dubbed the "Houston Volunteers," these were no ordinary wartime recruits.
