Hemiptera (/ hɛˈmɪptərə /; from Ancient Greek hemipterus 'half-winged') is an order of insects, commonly called true bugs, comprising over 80,000 species within groups such as the cicadas, aphids, planthoppers, leafhoppers, assassin bugs, bed bugs, and shield bugs.

Hemelytra is the scientific term for the forewings of true bugs (the order Hemiptera). It is a Greek word meaning half-sheath, and refers to half-stiff, half-membranous construction of the forewings.

Heteropteran bugs having fore wings clearly divided into two regions, a tough and leathery basal area and a membranous tip, and membranous hind wings; all four wings folded flat over their backs when not needed for flying.

Members of the suborder Heteroptera are known as “true bugs”. They have very distinctive front wings, called hemelytra, in which the basal half is leathery and the apical half is membranous. At rest, these wings cross over one another to lie flat along the insect’s back.
